Economy

Every candidate is going to say his or her first priority is creating jobs for the district. Mine is as well. You cannot serve your district well if you can't work with other government officials and business leaders to help the local economy grow.

Environment

Global warming has become a highly contentious issue. I believe the evidence is overwhelming that carbon dioxide is changing the climate for the worse. Even if that is shown to be wrong, there is further evidence that the acidification of the oceans poses a serious threat to our food chain.

Health Care

It is the government's responsibility to protect its citizens. My view is that this responsibility is the same whether a citizen is being attacked by a foreign soldier, a street criminal, or a virus.

Taxes

I propose that the first step to a fairer and more prosperous economy is improving the capital gains tax. A strong growing economy needs investment. However, as we are all too painfully aware, in many areas of high finance speculation has replaced true long-term investment.

Food Safety

The possibility of an extreme outbreak of food-borne illness is not being adequately addressed. As recent outbreaks of salmonella and e-coli in the United States and Europe and the prevalence of campylobacter indicate, there are major weaknesses in our food production system.
